Frequently Asked Questions

1. What will I learn in an English Corner session?

English Corner Sessions are meetings designed to help students improve their abilities to converse in English. The sessions will be held by volunteers who are fluent in English and the material in each session includes various activities designed to give students chances to practice dialogue in English.

2. Who will be teaching in the sessions?

2-4 High school volunteers who are fluent in English will be hosting each meeting.

3. When are the meetings?

The meetings are held weekly and are normally during Fridays or the weekend.

4. How do I attend the meetings?

Meetings invitations are sent by the volunteers through email, in order to receive an email, make sure to register for a group first. Emails are normally sent at least 24 hours prior to a meeting, be sure to check spam if an email can not be found.

5. Can I still join right now or is there a sign-up deadline?

There’s no sign-up deadline, join us anytime!

6. Do I need to prepare for a session?

Students only need to make sure they have a working device and are situated in a quiet environment without any distractions or loud noises.

7. What do I do if I can not come to a session?

Be sure to contact an administrator via email to info@citizensoftomorrow.org or Wechat at least 24 hours prior to the session. If a student did not contact at least 24 hours before, they will be marked as an unexcused absence. A student will be forced to leave the organization if they have 3 or more unexcused absences.

8. I have a technology problem right before a session, what do I do?

Don’t panic and message in the group chat (most groups will have one either on Wechat, messages...or etc) and try to log in on another device.

9. Is there an age limit for me to be a student?

English Corner sessions include elementary, teenage, adult, and even senior sessions. There is a session for everyone, and there’s no age limit in order to attend.

10. What kind of sessions are there available?

English Corner offers a variety of sessions to students. Sessions are mainly split into Elementary, Teenage, College, Adult, and Senior sessions. Each category then has subcategories such as basic, good, advanced, or international to accommodate students of all regions and their fluency in English.

11. Are there 1-on-1 sessions?

While some English Corner Sessions have fewer students in comparison to others, all English Corner Sessions are designed to be group lessons and do not offer 1-on-1.

12. How much do I need to pay for a session?

English Corner Sessions are offered at no cost (also known as free) to all students across the world who need help in learning to speak English.

13. What do I do if I will be arriving late or leaving early?

Message in the group chat and let the administrator/ meeting host know if the delay or the early leave is for a small amount of time (10 mins max); otherwise, let an administrator know or email info@citizensoftomorrow.org for a schedule change (must be 24 hours or more prior to the meeting to not count as an unexcused absence).

14. I don’t think this session is fit for my level of English, can I change to a different group?

If a student is confident a level is not fit for them, contact the administrator and explain the reasons. A level change will not be made if only the parent of the students wants a harder class. English Corner Sessions are designed to help students improve their abilities to communicate in English and a harder class will not necessarily be more beneficial than one that’s more suitable for the student.

15. Where are sessions held at?

All sessions are held on virtual meeting platforms such as Voov, Zoom ..etc. The specific platform is decided by the students of the group.

16. Is this only for Chinese students?

Absolutely not, English Corner Sessions are designed to help ALL students who need improvement in dialogue in English.

17. How do I know what is the topic next week?

A syllabus will be provided at the beginning of each month with the upcoming topics which will be discussed throughout the month. It will not necessarily contain specific activities; if an activity needs preparation from students (most likely very minimal), it will be messaged or emailed out at least 24 hours prior to the session.

18. Will there be extra activities to practice during the week after a session?

As of right now, English Corner does not specifically provide activities for extra practice, however, a student is welcome to continue practice activities used during the session if they desire.

19. Do I have to leave my camera on during a session?

Students are encouraged to have cameras on during the entire session, however, if a student is facing internet problems or other issues which hinder them to do so, they may let the meeting volunteers know and keep their cameras off.

20. Will English Corner sessions teach grammar?

English Corner Sessions are designed to improve dialogue and therefore will focus more on pronunciation rather than spelling or grammar, however, a student is welcome to ask questions regarding grammar or other aspects of English during their meeting.
